This morning I attended the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Breakfast hosted by the YMCA of Eastern Delaware County, Christ Lutheran Church, Prayer Chapel and area schools. It was a fitting tribute to a man whose impact transformed the face of our nation.

We have made great progress in race relations in recent years, but there is much still that needs to be done. We as a nation must continue to work to improve relations among all races, by encouraging a dialogue among our citizens so that we can better understand each others perspectives and views.

This challenge is being played out every day in communities across the nation. In the Upper Darby School District, for example, there is an incredible diversity of students from cultures throughout the world. Indeed, students there speak 50 different languages. But with these challenges come incredible opportunities to instill a better understanding about cultural differences that can help to build a stronger nation – beginning with our young people.

This Martin Luther King Day, let us reflect on the past, but recognize that there is much that must still be accomplished in the future to achieve Dr. King’s dream.
