Meehan Calls on Lentz to Join Him in “No New Tax Pledge”
Says Pennsylvanians can’t afford tax hikes to pay for ever-increasing government spending
DREXEL HILL, PA – Pat Meehan, the Republican candidate for Congress, today called on his opponent state legislator Bryan Lentz to join him in pledging to oppose tax increases. Meehan’s call for Lentz to make voters aware of his position on raising taxes comes amidst the potential for another drawn out state budget process and statements by Governor Ed Rendell that he would hold out “another 101 days” to get the budget he wants.
“Pennsylvanians are struggling in these difficult economic times,” said Meehan. “Rather than increase taxes on working families and small businesses already struggling to create jobs, Bryan Lentz should join me in pledging to oppose future tax increases. As I have met with the owners of various small businesses throughout the district, the message has been clear: taxes kill jobs.”
“Many small businesses are unwilling to invest in new hires or expansion because they are uncertain what the future holds for them in terms of tax increases, new regulations, and the impacts of federal legislation on their operations,” said Meehan. “We cannot continue to raise taxes in this economic environment if we want to create jobs. I backed up that belief by signing the taxpayer protection pledge and if Bryan Lentz supports working families and small businesses, he will do the same.”
Earlier this year, Lentz made the controversial claim that the budget he supported in 2009 was a “no tax budget.” A multitude of news accounts and statements by Governor Ed Rendell show that in reality Lentz and other Democrats voted for a billion-dollar tax hike bill on October 2 to offset increased state government spending contained in the state budget.
